    &lt;p&gt;A few years ago my eleven year old sister was writing an essay on violence in schools. During our discussion of different types of violence, she astutely pointed out that not all violence is physical, and that a mean comment can be just as violent as a punch in the face. This led to an involved conversation about bullies in which, at one point, my sister looked at me and said, “I think bullies are mean to the kids at school because no one is nice to them at home. No one is giving them love.”&lt;/p&gt;

That is, until he is bested by the younger, sleeker Vector (Jason Segal) and must enlist three orphaned girls in his grand plan to steal the moon. While the title of the movie suggests this is a film about a villain and his despicable acts, it is truly a love story about the bonds of parenthood, and the many ways people create family.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Like many animated features, &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002ZG97E2?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;tag=feminrevie-20&amp;amp;linkCode=as2&amp;amp;camp=1789&amp;amp;creative=9325&amp;amp;creativeASIN=B002ZG97E2&quot;&gt;&lt;em&gt;Despicable Me&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/a&gt; appeals to both adults and children by providing timely social commentary amidst silly sights and situations. The beauty of animation is that it allows imaginary caricatures to perform acts that are very real, and very human.  The title alone is a reflection of the human condition, for any one of us can be the “me” in question, participating in any variety of despicable acts on a daily basis.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;As the titular Me, Steve Carell adds another credit to his list of bumbling anti-heroes we love to see succeed. Though his accent is mildly distracting, audiences will recognize the same humble wit that endears us to him week after week on &lt;em&gt;The Office&lt;/em&gt;. Segal is equally impressive as Vector, a geek turned villain in response to a consistently disappointed father. But it is the always awesome Kristen Wiig who is perhaps the most despicable of all.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;As orphanage headmistress Miss Hattie, Wiig delivers her lines like glass of sweet tea with razor ice cubes—sugary sweet and viciously sharp all in the same mouthful. Clearly a jab at the adoption system, as well as gender and class privilege, she callously sends Margot, Edith, and Elsie out the door with the despicable Gruu, who offers no credentials or identification, but is simply disguised as a doctor.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;While the film neglects one of my cardinal rules of feminist filmmaking—having positive female role models—it did call into question traditional roles of masculinity, especially in response to parenthood. Margot, Edith, and Elsie were role models in their own right, emulating and each serving as a manifestation of responsibility (Margot), skepticism (Edith), and unquestioning affection (Elsie). In addition to having some of the funniest lines in the film, the sister’s camaraderie and confidence in their own relationship, as well as their unconditional love for each other and those around them, is what eventually turns Gruu from super bad to Super Dad.&lt;/p&gt;    &lt;div&gt;

    &lt;p&gt;Adorable, DIY-style animation and quirky music start off this excellent and important film about marriage equality in Ireland. Cara Holmes and Ciara Kennedy cut and paste stories, images, protests, and facts into a clever, witty, and purposeful narrative.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Voice-overs and interviews are illustrated and screened, intercut or overlaid upon footage from rallies, photo montages, and title cards (which have a very on-trend hand-drawn look). These touches make the film more accessible and adhere to the filmmakers’ established aesthetic. I really respect the directors’ decision to use this style–it actually underscores the gravity of the issue. It’s a very watchable, warm, and likeable documentary, and will have wide appeal.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Full disclosure: I met Cara when we were both booked at Ladyfest Berlin a few years ago, and her band wrote a song about my zine. A couple of years after that, we were both on the bill at Ladyfest Cork, which became the hen do before my UK civil partnership with my wife Sarah. Sarah and I actually staged a mock wedding as part of our comedy show at the festival, using vows rewritten to address the illegality of our marriage in Ireland. We met with  MarriagEquality, who were tabling at Ladyfest, and took badges back for our friends to wear while preparing for our ceremony in the UK. We knew some bills were being proposed, and things were looking pretty good in Ireland at the time–like this issue was moving ahead.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;When I saw &lt;a href=&quot;http://vimeo.com/11862207&quot;&gt;&lt;em&gt;If You Like It Then You Should Be Able To Put A Ring On It&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/a&gt; mentioned on a friend’s Facebook page, I immediately recognised Cara’s name and followed the link to the film. I felt really frustrated as I began watching; Ireland seems to have come no closer to legal and financial equality for queer couples who wish to marry.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Here’s a quote from one of the on-screen title sequences early on in the film:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;In 2005, it was argued before the High Court that Katherine and Ann Louise had a constitutional right to equality: a right to marry, property rights, and family rights. They also argued that the failure to recognise their marriage breached their rights under the European Convention on Human Rights. To date their marriage is still not recognised. On Feb 23, 2007 the case was appealed to the Supreme Court. There is no known timeframe for the Supreme Court hearing.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://vimeo.com/11862207&quot;&gt;&lt;em&gt;If You Like It...&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/a&gt; goes on to introduce couples who’ve married elsewhere, shows footage from protests and rallies (including some awesome placards!), interviews representatives from several marriage rights organisations, and manages the difficult task of presenting different viewpoints (civil partnership as a stepping stone to full equality vs. ‘separate but equal’ compromise) toward a common purpose remarkably well. It also puts the campaign into the larger context of queer rights around the world generally, and provides links in the credits to the organisations and artists who contributed to the film.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The pace of the film is quite inspiring–it builds to a climax that offers hope to the queer community, and should galvanise new allies into action. In the end, I was heartened by both the message and its style of delivery.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The case mentioned above is still pending, and a civil partnership bill is working its way through the Irish government, but it’s a slow process. Major props to Holmes and Kennedy for helping speed things along with this outstanding short film.&lt;/p&gt;    &lt;div&gt;

These stories forever bonded those of us who grew up during that time, especially young women who looked up to their wide-eyed but still fiery princesses as our ideals. (I remember gathering with friends in the back of the bus to sing &quot;Part of That World&quot; in unison on our way to school trips.)&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Long-time Disney producer Don Hahn&#039;s documentary provides a nostalgic trip for my generation, as well as an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at the special set of circumstances, or &quot;the perfect storm of people,&quot; that led to the creation of these classic films. As hard as it is to believe now, Disney&#039;s animated division was in serious trouble in the early &#039;80s, the company relying prominently on its live-action features like &lt;em&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00015YVD6?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;tag=feminrevie-20&amp;amp;linkCode=as2&amp;amp;camp=1789&amp;amp;creative=9325&amp;amp;creativeASIN=B00015YVD6&quot;&gt;Splash&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/em&gt; for its profits. Disney even went so far as to evict its stable of artists from the animation building, which eventually led to the management turnover that brought in Michael Eisner, Frank Wells, and Jeffrey Katzenberg, who made it his personal mission to &quot;wake up Sleeping Beauty.&quot;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In the following years, upper management brought in a slew of new artists, many from the musical theatre world, and put animators to work round the clock on what would become their most successful feature in decades, &lt;em&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F8O35U?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;tag=feminrevie-20&amp;amp;linkCode=as2&amp;amp;camp=1789&amp;amp;creative=9325&amp;amp;creativeASIN=B000F8O35U&quot;&gt;The Little Mermaid&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/em&gt;. Collaborators like composer Howard Ashman injected that epic sensibility into Disney&#039;s developing tales, but Hahn&#039;s treatment of the creative process in his documentary is anything but epic. Hahn takes great joy in poking fun at the clash of personalities behind the scenes, with caricatures of execs and animators alike sprinkled throughout. He makes the tensest of decisions playful, earning laughs even when (or especially when) things turn ugly.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Hahn&#039;s approach is fitting for Disney&#039;s animators during this era, a group of people who played just as hard as they worked. At one point early in the film, when they&#039;re all still fearing for their jobs, Hahn shows them keeping their spirits up by reenacting Apocalypse Now in the office. It&#039;s not all fun and games, though; Hahn also gives us an interesting albeit brief look at their difficult working conditions. Huge prices were paid by the artists for such a prolific period, mainly personal, many animators working too many hours to spend time with family and friends.&lt;/p&gt;

    &lt;p&gt;As an independent woman struggling to experience life for myself instead of through a man, I’m always looking for inspiration from other women who develop identities beyond being appendages or servants to men. As I was already familiar with the story of Sita, a Hindu goddess, I was curious to see how Nina Paley would present the story in her animated film. Simply going by the graphics, the movie is a fantastic exploration of the parallels between the ancient mythological world and modern day. The animation is split into three distinct segments which alternate: Sita’s journey, the three shadow puppet narrators, and Nina’s marriage, which spans America and India.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;A polished and highly stylized production, &lt;em&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.sitasingstheblues.com/&quot;&gt;Sita Sings the Blues&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/em&gt; is, surprisingly, Paley’s first full length film. Music, dance, and comedy fill the screen with bright colors and sounds and there is a mix of Indian flavor and 1920s jazz. The only visual that bothered me was Sita’s tiny waist line, giant boobs and matching swivel hips—then again, that image might be a deliberate mockery of feminist ideals on Paley’s part.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Sita and her modern sister, Paley, follow and devote themselves to their respectful husbands. Sadly, their loyalty isn’t enough to win reciprocal devotion from the men. Sita goes through trial after trial in her displays of devotion; she’s kidnapped by an evil king and her husband Rama accuses her of being unfaithful; she has his babies and he takes his sons back (but not her) and so on. Paley follows her husband across the globe to India where he shows absolutely no interest in her and, in fact, leaves her not only sexually frustrated, but alone.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;As the two women continue to make sacrifices for their unresponsive men, the clever puppet narrators debate the difference between unconditional love and martyrdom. In the process, they help to explain the history behind the Sita myth.
