Soap Sampler & Solid Body Lotion

I discovered Soap Lady Oregon products at—of all places—a chocolate festival in Portland, Oregon. While the products obviously aren't edible, they smelled better—and had healthier ingredients—than many of the food products that my partner and I sampled at the event.

I believe you can vote with your pocketbook, and it was nice to know that the company uses all-natural, vegan and cruelty-free ingredients. Their mission is actually to provide non-toxic products with no preservatives, and they go one step further by listing all of their ingredients on the company's website. This is especially handy if you have any known allergies or have particularly sensitive skin.

In addition, there's the satisfaction of supporting a women-owned small business. Still not enough reasons to try their soap? There's the absolutely soothing experience of using the products themselves.

At just $6, the soap sampler gift box features four travel-sized, yummy-smelling soaps: rose, spice, tea tree, and calendula lavender. Despite their small size, each soap lasted several days in my shower, which is no small feat considering that my partner has a woodworking hobby and I have a workout fetish. The scents were spicy and natural but not overpowering or perfume-y, and they were, for lack of a better word, soft. I can't wait to try some of the sweeter scents, like sweet vanilla and peppermint swirl. A full-size, five ounce bar is $4.50.

At $2.50, the solid body lotion was even more of a steal. Just a tiny bit of this citrus-scented lotion goes a long way, and it will last awhile, even if you work in a job that requires frequent hand washing (or are a compulsive hand washer like me.)

If you're looking for some TLC and inexpensive luxury, this is the place to find it.

Truth Belt: The Westie

As more companies are becoming earth and animal-friendly, and the DIY movement has seen resurgence in the past few years, I have been on the lookout for a good selection of quality vegan belts. I’ve encountered a lot of hemp and vinyl belts, and even some belts made out of bicycle inner tubes, but I still haven’t found one company that offers a wide variety of both classy and funky vegan belts. Enter: Truth Belts.

Truth is an animal-friendly accessory company based in Canada. Started by Renia Pruchinicki in 2001, who originally started making belts from non-leather material, Truth began as a side project in making long-lasting belts from vegan material grew into a full-time business. Her business website also hosts an informative links page in which readers can find businesses, groups, journals, magazines, and other vegan and vegetarian-friendly information.

The belt that I was sent to review is from the hemp-woven line of belts. This particular design is called The Westie. The belt is constructed of polyurethane with a navy blue and khaki colored woven hemp outer layer. The buckle is an antique nickel color, and the whole thing looks wonderful with a pair of jeans. I’ve been wearing the belt around for the past month, and nothing about it has started to fall apart. It’s a very well designed vegan belt, and I’m excited to have another vegan clothing accessory in my life to prove to my friends that you can look good without having to wear parts of animals.

Aside from the casual woven belts, Truth also makes fake-leather looking classy belts, as well as funky elastic belts with argyle, stripes, and plaid designs. Truth also hosts a line of fashionable wrist cuffs and belts for kids.

Overall, I’m very satisfied with my vegan belt, and will probably buy some of Truth’s other belts for friends and relatives. Aside from supporting a company that promotes veganism, I’m also happy to be supporting a business started and run by one hard-working woman.

Replenishing Hand Cream (Rose Flower)

My paternal grandmother was the offspring of a French immigrant family that emigrated to the United States. She came of age during a time of great extravagance (Roaring Twenties) followed by a sharp decline (Great Depression) and then raised five children—three boys and two girls—by herself in St. Louis, Missouri while my grandfather reported for duty during World War II. In my grandparents' house there were two bathrooms, one pink and the other blue, a color-coded system marked by a form of gender segregation that had a utilitarian function in the large and evenly split household. By the time my sister and I came along, the only two girls in a slew of grandsons (though there would later be two more to join the ranks), we considered this division a privilege.

When I opened the fifty-gram circular container of Circaroma Replenishing Hand Cream, the smell reminded me of my grandmother's powder room. Immaculately kept with fuzzy toilet seat covers, matching towels the color of cotton candy, and decorative wallpaper with tiny bunches of flowers and stripes of gold, this room was a feminine haven. Greens Plus Protein Bars

Snacking is inevitable. I regularly snarf all varieties of energy bars, even though I am not climbing mountains, lofting from ski jumps, or training for triathlons. I schlepp groceries and books and stomp down city sidewalks, but do not exert myself on Himalayan Peaks or the Appalachian Trail. However, my energy bar consumption trailed off once I heard a physician 'tsk' that most contained so many chemical ingredients and were so high sugar that he'd prefer that his patients consume a vitamin pill and chocolate bar.

I was happy to comply, but have since discovered GREENS+ products, endorsed by athletes and activists, doctors and distributors, and also the recipient of nine international awards. Items include not only energy and protein bars, but mixable powders and concoctions such as Greens Plus, Fiber Greens, Protein Greens, Pro-Relief, Jungle Greens, Coral Calcium, Thermo Greens, Immune Guard, and Omega Chia. Products are hand-mixed at facilities in compliance with Natural Products Association and GMP-certification standards. The protein bars contain no salt, refined sugar, corn syrup, hydrogenated oil, synthetic sweeteners, preservatives, or genetically-modified plant products. They're light enough to not feel overly decadent, and tasty enough to qualify as 'treats.'

If you're more inclined to get your daily dose of good-for-you potions in the morning, there are Superfood and Greensicle supplements, as well as 'Wild Berry Burst' powders to take stirred into water or your favorite juice. I tend to associate 'Chia' with the infomercial standard 'Chia Pets,'* but apparently there is a plant, Salvia hispanica, also called Chia, a whole food source of Omega3. Yes, comedy is inherently tasteless and incorrect, i.e., Eddie Murphy's Buckwheat portrayals, but would we tolerate a depiction of the President as the same character? Or, do they offer any Chia Pet versions of Caucasian officials? Until they offer a Chia Washington and Chia Lincoln, let me know if this merits a Chia Boycott._

A gift box arrived at my home several weeks ago, origin unknown until my partner came staggering through the door, trying to balance the behemoth shipment he’d fetched from the post office. “It’s from Jaimie and Sabrina!” My kind, thoughtful acupuncturist and psychiatrist back in Boston—who share an office space, an affinity for holistic treatment, and unending support for my international move—had sent a care package after receiving a card from us. Allergy tested and paraben-free, this mascara actually doesn’t clump! Really! If you prefer to wear less mascara, this is absolutely the perfect product for you!

I really enjoyed the scent, which I could still smell after application! The “sweet, spicy gingerbread aroma” is from natural conditioning oils and food grade colorants, and apparently, this “special combination dates back to the 1930s!” The mascara remained soft as I continued to apply it and did not get stiff or brittle. My lashes looked totally fringy and soft!

Another great thing about this mascara is that, while it is waterproof, it is also easy to remove! I can always count on my other waterproof mascara staying put for the next three days, which is extremely annoying, but this mascara is easily removed with soap and water.

This latest addition to Bésame Cosmetics' “famous and classic era-style make-up line” will make a welcome addition to your make-up bag!

Complexion Bar

I stumbled upon The Soap Factory in Longview, WA while exploring the downtown area nearly seven years ago. I fell in love with the shop and its products instantly, and have continued to order them online after leaving the job in Longview.

The Soap Factory's Complexion Bar is a tried and true favorite of mine. While it's not cheap ($6.99), the four-ounce bar lasts a long, long time. (I just bought a new one, having purchased the previous bar in 2006.) With real avocado fruit, carrot juice, shea butter and a host of essential oils, it smells good enough to eat. Because The Soap Factory uses authentic ingredients, you don't have to worry about your skin drying out or developing allergies.

It has been a pleasure to see owner Dawn Gregg expand her business, which she started in her home in 1998. She opened her store in 2000 as the sole proprietress, and has since expanded into the retail space next door and added several employees. Along with the complexion bar, I recommend her other soaps and lotions as well.

Wash 'n' Wear Pads

You’ve got your period. You start digging through your stash and - what? - no more pads! Do you make a last minute dash to the store to sift through new and expensive gimmicks? Perhaps you’ve thought, “There has got to be a better way!” There is.

I tried the small, medium and large cloth menstrual pads by Australian maker, Pleasure Puss. The design of the cloth pad is quite simple: absorbent cotton, adjustable snap and closure wings. Like most women, I thought “Is that for me? Will it be gross and leaky?” I was worried about the absorbency, and if I felt like I would be wearing a diaper and constantly checking for leaks. Not so. The cloth material means no bunchy or sticky plastic to get all twisted out of shape, and the absorbency was far above what I have experienced with any store-brand pad - no leaks or wet feeling. No fancy gels either; Pleasure Puss pads are all natural and come in cute colors and designs (mushroom tartan!).

You can clean them by hand or in the washing machine in cold water. The pads wash easily and thoroughly. You can put them in the dryer, but I sat them in the sun and they dried in about 2–3 hours.

On the Pleasure Puss website, I calculated that I would be saving roughly $5,000 from now until menopause on disposable menstrual items! Reusable cloth menstrual pads are not just financially wise, but it is heath-wise not to put the strange chemicals in the ‘super absorbent gel’ or ‘cotton-like lattice’ - blablabla - next to one’s delicate parts, or to hand those substances off to mother earth when the garbage gets hauled to some landfill.

3 Citrus Whipped Shea Butter

Dry knuckles? Ashy hands and elbows? Tried every lotion on the shelf? You need Prairieland Herbs' 3 Citrus Whipped Shea Butter. When I opened the little tin tub (which can be reused for multiple purposes), I was taken aback; it actually look like whipped butter! I had to resist sticking my finger in and giving it a lick. Compared to more solid shea butter, this is very gentle and airy—easy to spread and rub in.

As soon as I could, I put it to the test. My knuckles stayed moisturized throughout my daily routine much longer than conventional lotions. I didn’t notice dryness on my hands until five to six hours after I applied it. My knees and the rest of my body were smooth and moisturized until the next day. And it smells incredible. The “3 Citrus” in the name comes from lemon, tangerine and orange essential oils. As great as they smell, these and jojoba oil give it a slightly greasy feel until you rub it in, but it works so well that this doesn’t deter me in the slightest.

Prairieland Herbs has a wide assortment of shea butter products in addition to the 3 Citrus. Not only is their shea butter fair trade, but they are also committed to producing the most natural products possible. For someone who doesn’t like rubbing scary chemicals on her body, this was a major plus for me. Loose Mineral Foundation/Concealer

I have a great deal of fun with makeup. Playing with different looks is a creative outlet for me, and I really enjoy trying different cosmetics. I like using foundation, but I have sensitive skin, so it can be hit or miss finding a brand that doesn't make my face burn. So I was excited to try this product by Jenulence, which is hypo-allergenic, all-natural and cruelty-free.

This loose powder foundation/concealer is very light and feels great; perfect for anyone with skin sensitivities. It also provides nice coverage while giving a very natural look. My face doesn't look buried under several orange layers, as I've found with many brands. It can be applied either wet or dry – I applied a wet layer first, to cover any inconsistencies, and then dusted on a final dry layer to finish it off. The result was very flattering – and didn't make my face burn at all!

Mineral Eye Shadow

I have to admit that my taste far exceeds most paychecks I've brought in. There are certain things I have admired from afar, but never thought I would actually own. Mineral makeup is one of those things. Getting to try out Jenulence's mineral eye shadow in Dawn Matte was super fun. I went into the experience as the pleased owner of a mineral powder that decreases the redness in my face and is light, non-greasy and doesn't make me breakout. Who wouldn't love that?

When I first saw the color I was a little surprised. The Dawn Matte eye shadow looked pretty grey. I mean I guess I don't know what to expect when I hear the word "dawn," but I usually think of something more earthy, with browns. But when I put on the Jenulence eye shadow the grayness was diluted to a basic neutral, and I was more than pleased. I imagine the color would look good on anyone if it worked for someone as pale as me. Plus, the powder blends easily on the eyelids and lasts for hours. I know because I wore it before my big night on the town. I had an early dinner, went to a show and then went dancing afterward. Even after sweating for a couple hours, at 1 a.m. my eyes were still powdered, looking as good as they had when I first put the makeup on. I heart mineral makeup.

Premium Cinnamon Cookies

Vegans, those who cannot have gluten, and other health-conscious consumers will be happy to hear about Sun Flour Baking Company (based in Sacramento, California), which offers a variety of products that, like these cinnamon cookies, are wheat and gluten-free, contain no cholesterol or refined sugar, and are egg and dairy free. In addition, this particular variety has no trans fat or hydrogenated oil, and twenty-two percent of the ingredients used are organic. Rice and pinto bean flour substitute for the wheat flour traditionally used in baking, and sweetness is provided by organic evaporated cane juice, brown rice syrup and grape juice concentrate.

While I applaud Sun Flour Baking Company for making a healthier treat that can be enjoyed by many people with dietary restrictions, I found them a tad dry and quite dense compared to traditional cookies, which makes them a bit heavy. On the other hand, they fill you up quicker than the average cookie, which could mean eating fewer cookies per serving. My co-worker Brian (who cannot have gluten) complained that they were a bit sugary, but I didn’t think so. Ample cinnamon provides plenty of flavor, and Brian described the dessert as a “doughy cinnamon delivery system.”

While I would welcome a moister cookie, overall I was impressed with this relatively healthy snack, which includes, according to the list of ingredients, “lots of love.”
