    &lt;p&gt;Not many theorists would re-imagine Jane Eyre as a Maoist. However, postcolonial thinker Rey Chow does and with great aplomb. Furthermore, it&#039;s not in the context of English literature in which Chow invokes the fictional heroine, but rather the issue of Orientalism in today&#039;s academia. According to Chow, the Maoist Jane Eyre is a romantic and a self-styled victim that is embodied in the non-native scholar of East Asian studies who bemoans the loss of cultural “authenticity” in an increasingly globalised world. Chow&#039;s deft and even fanciful portrayal of the latter-day Orientalist that demonstrates her creative ingenuity and unconventional analytical mind is evident throughout the collection of her essays, &lt;em&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0231149956?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;tag=feminrevie-20&amp;amp;linkCode=as2&amp;amp;camp=1789&amp;amp;creative=9325&amp;amp;creativeASIN=0231149956&quot;&gt;The Rey Chow Reader&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/em&gt;, edited by Paul Bowman.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;These qualities are important in the primary themes tackled in her writings—sexuality, racism, and postcolonialism. In the post-Edward Said world, the Orientalism of yore is not only outmoded but a disgrace to the Western academic code of practice, but Chow is perceptive to detect the more subtle Orientalisms she finds still pervasive in the academy, particularly in East Asian studies in Western institutions. Not only are academics (and often highly respected icons; Julia Kristeva for one) safe from Chow&#039;s relentless critique of latter day Orientalism, the works and words of art house film-makers Zhang Yimou and Bernado Bertolucci also go under her microscopic scrutinising gaze.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;She is also self-aware of her own position in the ivory tower that she turns this gaze towards herself in an essay about her early career in academia; scholars from the former colonial frontier during the dissolution of the British empire such as herself (Chow hails from Hong Kong) were seduced by the imagined prestige of English literature that rendered Chinese writing less superior and intellectually legitimate. Chow&#039;s essay on the postcolonial-ised scholar is a subdued call to arms for the reclamation of one&#039;s own scholarship and by effect, cultural identity, even if one cannot readily give up the tools fashioned by the master.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;It becomes clear that Chow is also deeply political. &#039;Seeing is Destroying&#039; charts the changes in the US discourse of war since the devastating bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to today&#039;s brutality of war made sophisticated. These historical observations are perhaps nothing new, however, her concept of the target has chilling resonance of the primordial hunt. As the target in the hunt for America&#039;s national Other, first Japan, then the USSR, and now the shadowy figure of the Muslim terrorist, it is reduced to an object on which the trigger is on perpetual threat mode. What links &#039;Seeing is Destroying&#039; with most of Chow&#039;s essays is visuality and the continued technological advancements that make the act of seeing increasingly powerful and more instrumental in xenophobic and sexist control.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Chow&#039;s tentacle-like approach to a diversity of disciplines that probes into every crevice of detail promises a thrilling experience and an inspiration to younger scholars of postcolonialism like myself. Perhaps the level of microscopic detail that Chow magnifies throughout her merciless analyses on Orientalism in film and her idiosyncrantic salad-bowl approach to theory may not appeal to everyone, but Chow has certainly created a fan in me.&lt;/p&gt;    &lt;div&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Then I got older. And so they have taken four flawed but generally likable women and made them repugnant.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Charlotte’s chirpy childishness—always a little icky—seems gross coming from a twice-married woman with two children. Carrie’s self-centered flakiness and drama-whoring is exhausting. Samantha and Miranda are unrecognizable—Sam having gone from an independent woman in charge of her sexuality to a desperate caricature fighting to hold on to her youth (Note: Chris Noth, who plays Mr. Big, is two years older than Kim Cattrall, who plays Samantha. Interesting that Samantha is portrayed as fading, while Big still gets to be…well…Mr. Big) while Miranda quits her job because the new partner at the firm is a sexist jerk. No fight. She simply gives up, which seems completely out of character.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;No woman ever follows the tenets of Islam by choice; all women who wear &lt;em&gt;abaya&lt;/em&gt; or &lt;em&gt;niqab&lt;/em&gt; are oppressed and secretly want to be white, wealthy, American women who wear revealing couture. Arab women who are not oppressed may be bellydancers in Western-style nightclubs. It is feminist to travel to Muslim countries and expose yourself, simulate fellatio on a hookah, grab a man’s penis in a restaurant, and possibly have sex on a public beach. If you are trying to communicate in an Arab country and cannot find the right words, saying “lalalalalala” will get your point across.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Now, I am sure there are those who will say that I am thinking too deeply about a movie that is meant to be a bit of fluff. And then there was the spectacle of seeing Liza Minelli performing “Single Ladies.” Yes, Liza with a “z” sings Beyonce with a “B.”&lt;/p&gt;

Massad, Associate Professor of Modern Arab Politics and Intellectual History at Columbia, was likely among the few who were not mocking this assertion. In &lt;em&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0226509591?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;tag=feminrevie-20&amp;amp;linkCode=as2&amp;amp;camp=1789&amp;amp;creative=9325&amp;amp;creativeASIN=0226509591&quot;&gt;Desiring Arabs&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/em&gt;, Massad rejects Western sexual epistemology, which he sees as the colonizing mission of &quot;Gay International&quot;: &quot;an academic literature &#039;describing&#039; and &#039;explaining&#039; what they call &#039;homosexuality&#039; in Arab and Muslim history to the present; and journalistic accounts of the lives of so-called &#039;gays&#039; and (much less so) &#039;lesbians&#039; in the contemporary Arab and Muslim worlds.&quot;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;He argues that the consequence, if this Western &quot;progressive&quot; epistemology takes hold, will be the suppression of same-sex desire and practices as they have been and remain a part of Arab and Muslim culture. The larger frame is the damage wrought by orientalist scholarship that framed much of Arab expression of desire as &quot;deviant&quot;—the &quot;love of beardless boys&quot; being a phenomenon that needs to be explained away and eradicated. There are no homosexuals (as there are no hetereosexuals) because those categories are ahistorical and culturally constructed and fail to account for the complexity and ambiguity of “Arab desire” as understood through a decolonized historical frame of reference.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;As &quot;an act of archiving,&quot; as Massad refers to his own study, this book is remarkable and will be required reading for those studying contemporary Middle Eastern culture. He draws on a wealth of historical texts, as well as a range of contemporary criticism, to stitch together a revised notion of Arab intellectual history and, particularly, the &quot;problem&quot; of its sexual &quot;licentiousness.&quot; His work is not as stylish as &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/039474067X?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;tag=feminrevie-20&amp;amp;linkCode=as2&amp;amp;camp=1789&amp;amp;creative=9325&amp;amp;creativeASIN=039474067X&quot;&gt;Edward Said&lt;/a&gt;’s, nor is he the memorable phrasemaker his mentor was. But he is an accomplished intellectual historian, one to be reckoned with. As a polemic, however, the book is stunningly shallow and under-documented.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I write this review on the morning a Saudi Arabian court ordered forty lashes for a 75-year-old woman who was visited by two (unrelated) men, one for whom she had served as a nursemaid and had the audacity to bring her bread. I imagine the author’s chiding me for my sympathy for the &quot;international human rights agenda,&quot; another one of those obnoxious Western colonizers accusing the Arab world of a cultural &quot;retardation.&quot; &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I find it laudable that Massad warn against the dangers of epistemological binaries. That he leads us towards different transhistorical methods of understanding sexual desire in the literature, from pre-Islamic poetry to contemporary fiction, is of great scholarly value. But his lack of sympathy for other groups struggling against oppression—or even those trying to reconstruct a sense of identity not based on someone’s notion of pathology—is troubling. In fact, his argument against the discourse of universalization leads, I think, to a new sort of binary: belief in the possibility of universal human liberation/colonization or cultural isolation and a militant defense against interference.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;He is at his weakest when he departs from his role as archivist and critic of Arab cultural history and flails against international rights movements. He quickly smacks down the &quot;white Western women’s movement, which has sought to universalize its issues through imposing its own colonial feminism on the women&#039;s movement in non-Western countries.&quot; He claims that the series of events including the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995 led only to major schism, and he footnotes a couple of one-sided, obviously biased accounts to support his claim. This is not only bias, but bad scholarship, and bad scholarship, even in a potentially important book, is troubling indeed.&lt;/p&gt;    &lt;div&gt;
