I chose the Black Diamond Beaver vibe because it was one of the larger shaft sizes available, and the picture made me squeal out loud. It’s definitely the sexiest beaver vibe I’ve ever seen.

Black Diamond Beaver didn’t disappoint once the box was opened. It has a sleek, shiny, black body and a see-through shaft that houses three rows of spinning silver beads. A silver beaver and diamond-like crystals all around the base complete the aesthetic package, and running through its settings while just holding it in my hand was exciting in itself.

Packed with several handy features, this vibe is multi-speed, with separate controls for vibration strength and rotation speed. A center control reverses direction of rotation, and this clever selection allows for some interesting maneuvers. All of the controls are set into the base and light up to show their present setting.

The shaft and head of the vibe are anatomically representative, with a beaver vibrator/stimulator attached along the top length. The beaver’s tongue oscillates with the speed of vibration selected. The motor sound is really only noticeable on the highest settings, and it was not loud enough to be a distraction.

Black Diamond Beaver is waterproof for shower or pool use, and is also phthalate free. I did have to let it air out for a day or two to dissipate the strong plastic smell, but washing it a few times sped up the process.

A few design flaws came up swiftly during my solo trial run. The control pad is flush to the base, and the buttons are not raised, so you can’t tell which one you are pressing until the action occurs. This is a distinct problem when the buttons are now upside down, facing away from you, your hands are covered in lube, and the button you just pressed was exactly the opposite of the one you were aiming for.

Also, although the head and shaft are a nice size, and the head has a good solid feel, the center see-through section is only a thin layer of covering over the bead spinner, so even a small amount of pressure stops the rotation completely. This causes the motor to whine and you have to abruptly stop whatever it was you were attempting. No squeezing allowed, my friends.

The portion of the shaft between the beaver and the head is very short, it is almost impossible to have any recognition of the inserted head before being impaled by the beaver. I understand you buy this kind of vibe because you want the beaver, but in this case it presents two problems. First, there is very little clearance between the shaft and the beaver, so if you are at all thickly made, it is hard to get the beaver’s tongue to reach its target, and it just ends up poking you. The second is that the tongue is surprisingly hard, and when going at high vibration it actually feels quite sharp.

I could have gotten around the beaver issue by just flipping it onto the bottom side, but the head and shaft above was a miserable tease. The shaft head was lovely; it had a nice texture that picked up body heat and worked well with lube, but once just past the head, you slide immediately onto the collapsing center section, at which point the motor freeze bursts whatever fantasy bubble you were busily constructing.

This is a clear case of beauty over function. If you are looking for something visually exciting, and you have a partner who likes strong clitoral sensation without much insertion, this would be a great choice. During partner play, you would be able to choose the desired settings and have control over the action sequences. But if, like me, you’re looking for full insertion capability coupled with the additional features, this beaver is likely not the right animal for you.

Though the cast wasn't super diverse, it is always refreshing when there is a variety of real-sized bodies. Also of note was the use of safer sex; gloves and condoms were utilized throughout. Since there is generally not a lot of sex education oriented towards queers, I was glad to see a film where it encourages the notion that safe sex can be both easy to do and not make sex play any less erotic.

Seven Minutes in Heaven: Coming Out! has a lot to offer, and scenes get better and better as the film progresses and the participants get more comfortable with each other. Watching this film certainly made me very curious to explore Courtney Trouble's other films. If they are as appealing as this one, I would say she deserves all the credit she has coming her way.

The Blueberry Buzz vibrator looks like a good time, if a good time brings the 1970s disco era to mind—you dancing with your friends in a place overflowing with neon electric lights and disco music. The consequence is that the head is detached from the vibrations that shake the body of the vibrator; there’s no action at the tip. The plasticity of the vibrator again adds to its value as a travel companion, but it also makes the vibrator feel terribly cheap—it seems more of a gag gift than sex toy.

Also a bit perplexing is the product note included in the package, which reads “[f]or external use only.” Um... really? To my vibe-enthusiasts out there, I suppose there’s not much more to say, now, is there? Clearly Blueberry Buzz is intended for some lighthearted fun—perhaps even waved around as a glow-stick at a Jonas Brothers concert—but it is not intended for hardcore action.

Silicone Night Time Buddy

For weeks I looked forward to my pale pink Night Time Buddy. The picture I saw online made it look so cute... and effective. Upon opening the box, however, cute was not what came to mind. Six inches always sounded so good, yet when I feverishly cut away the packaging tape what came to mind was “huge” and, admittedly, “terrifying.”

Generals: Two AA batteries (not included) and about half an hour later I had faith that the Night Time Buddy had earned its (largish) place among the other battery-operated gadgets in my nightstand drawer. At first, the veins and balls gave my gizmo the uncanny valley effect, but I soon realized that once between your legs, it really doesn’t matter what it looks like. My new pal, er, buddy, has four fun vibrating settings with different rhythms, and will never go soft on you when you’re in the mood. I do wish that the vibrations were a little more intense, but the highest setting got me there with a little effort.

Details: The suction cup worked great on the kitchen counter, but in the bedroom I was hard-pressed to find something it would grip. It does not stick to the wall, and I didn’t even try putting my particleboard Ikea furniture at the peril of my bucking hips. In order to take full advantage of that feature, you’re going to need to be resourceful. SexIs: Sex and All Things Sexual

There are an abundance of websites about sex, gender, and pleasure that range from academic, theoretical discussions to medical descriptions to sexual how-to guides, and I was admittedly skeptical of SexIs, a sex-positive community devoted to “sex and all things sexual” started by online sex toy company Eden Fantasies.

Updated weekly by a diverse collection of writers (including Feminist Review founder Mandy Van Deven), SexIs features a variety of articles about aging, disabilities, kink, fetishes, politics, anatomy, "green" sex toys, contraceptives, and body image for just about everyone—including lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, straight people, transgendered folks, and those who choose not to self-identify sexually. As a Brown University undergraduate student, I was particularly interested in the excerpt from Confessions of an Ivy League Pornographer about Sam Benjamin, a ’99 alumnus who used his education to become what he describes as a “filthy but good-hearted pornographer.” In his biography, Benjamin explains his attempt to make sex positive films; however, in practice, this led to no lucrative end. In other articles, Benjamin reviews sex and women-positive projects, such as the film Rough Sex by Tristan Taormino, the only self-declared mainstream feminist pornographer.

SexIs is just one of many virtual community spaces Eden Fantasies has developed; they also have a section with interviews, a blog, and interactive forums. The content of the site reminds me of a gender-neutral discussion group I participate in called FemSex that facilitates learning and provides a safe-space that encourages individuals to gain knowledge, make self-aware decisions, explore available options, and validate their own experiences. While the SexIs' attempt to be an all-inclusive portal may seem too overwhelming or superficial to some, in the end, it creates an open space to delve into the full fluid spectrum of human sexuality. Although I question their consumerist intentions, the site is a positive space for people to learn, debate, and share ideas and experiences about pleasure.
