“Please turn off anything that beeps, buzzes, or vibrates.” And with that comic admonishment to the audience, Pulitzer Prize-nominated writer Sarah Ruhl’s play about the advent of vibrators began.

The setting is Dr. Givings home, where his living room is located next to, and within earshot of, the “surgical theater.” Here, Dr. Givings (played by Eric Hissom) treats hysteria, a “medical ailment” dating back to about 300 BC, when Hippocrates thought women’s madness stemmed from their womb. Meanwhile, back on stage, the good doctor’s wife (Katie deBuys) wonders why patients come in with symptoms of anxiety and leave, only anxious to come back again—and soon.

Above the noise of “oh-ooh-oooh,” Dr. Givings himself groans about the bygone days of manual stimulation: “It was like a child’s game–trying to rub the head and the stomache at the same time.” Why, the procedure could take up to an hour! With the electric massager, “paroxyms” can be had within three to five minutes time and, if they don’t, um, come, Dr. Givings hands the tedious task over to his competent assistant Annie (played by Sarah Marshall).

While patients such as Mrs. Daldry (Kimberly Gilbert) and a male patient named Leo Irving (Cody Nickell) make it clear their emotional needs are not being met–Mrs. Daldry cannot have children and Mr. Irving cannot find the passionate love that his creative soul desires—the doctor steadfastly believes their symptoms can be treated with the latest technology of the day, the electromechanical vibrator for her and the anal dialater for him.

So the new device makes patients happier—so happy that Mrs. Givings breaks into the room and tries it out herself for her own hysteria–feeling unfulfilled in her marriage and inadequate in nourishing her newborn—but, alas it’s not fixing the problems.

Aside from having unmet emotional needs, women’s sexuality is still not recognized and even feared, as the men highlight in their joke about a friend that thought women looked like marble statues you see in a museum—and then ran like a mad man from his wife when he saw she had beastly hair “down there.” Only the wet nurse Elizabeth (played by Jessica Frances Dukes) hired to feed Dr. and Mrs. Givings’ baby, understands the connection between the vibrator and sexual pleasure. Otherwise, the technological wonder is thought to produce a confusing mixture of pain and pleasure. So confusing it brings them back daily to figure out if they like it or not!

Behavior like this and many other comedic opportunities make director Aaron Posner’s In the Next Room a humorous, but not insensitively so, play about the history behind the medical use of vibrators. It subtly and sometimes not-so-subtly highlights the utter lack of knowledge and understanding of women’s physical bodies, sexual desires, and emotional needs. It beautifully portrays women’s roles, relationships, and subordination to men during Victorian times and reminds us that even today, we still grapple with some of these issues. However, the play about vibrators will make an historical imprint itself—made many years after we laughed about the link between masturbation and mental illness in men-and will stimulate discussion of female sexuality for years to come.

Black Diamond Beaver

I chose the Black Diamond Beaver vibe because it was one of the larger shaft sizes available, and the picture made me squeal out loud. It’s definitely the sexiest beaver vibe I’ve ever seen.

Black Diamond Beaver didn’t disappoint once the box was opened. It has a sleek, shiny, black body and a see-through shaft that houses three rows of spinning silver beads. A silver beaver and diamond-like crystals all around the base complete the aesthetic package, and running through its settings while just holding it in my hand was exciting in itself.

Packed with several handy features, this vibe is multi-speed, with separate controls for vibration strength and rotation speed. A center control reverses direction of rotation, and this clever selection allows for some interesting maneuvers. All of the controls are set into the base and light up to show their present setting.

The shaft and head of the vibe are anatomically representative, with a beaver vibrator/stimulator attached along the top length. The beaver’s tongue oscillates with the speed of vibration selected. The motor sound is really only noticeable on the highest settings, and it was not loud enough to be a distraction.

Black Diamond Beaver is waterproof for shower or pool use, and is also phthalate free. I did have to let it air out for a day or two to dissipate the strong plastic smell, but washing it a few times sped up the process.

A few design flaws came up swiftly during my solo trial run. The control pad is flush to the base, and the buttons are not raised, so you can’t tell which one you are pressing until the action occurs. This is a distinct problem when the buttons are now upside down, facing away from you, your hands are covered in lube, and the button you just pressed was exactly the opposite of the one you were aiming for.

Also, although the head and shaft are a nice size, and the head has a good solid feel, the center see-through section is only a thin layer of covering over the bead spinner, so even a small amount of pressure stops the rotation completely. This causes the motor to whine and you have to abruptly stop whatever it was you were attempting. No squeezing allowed, my friends.

The portion of the shaft between the beaver and the head is very short, it is almost impossible to have any recognition of the inserted head before being impaled by the beaver. I understand you buy this kind of vibe because you want the beaver, but in this case it presents two problems. First, there is very little clearance between the shaft and the beaver, so if you are at all thickly made, it is hard to get the beaver’s tongue to reach its target, and it just ends up poking you. The second is that the tongue is surprisingly hard, and when going at high vibration it actually feels quite sharp.

I could have gotten around the beaver issue by just flipping it onto the bottom side, but the head and shaft above was a miserable tease. The shaft head was lovely; it had a nice texture that picked up body heat and worked well with lube, but once just past the head, you slide immediately onto the collapsing center section, at which point the motor freeze bursts whatever fantasy bubble you were busily constructing.

This is a clear case of beauty over function. If you are looking for something visually exciting, and you have a partner who likes strong clitoral sensation without much insertion, this would be a great choice. During partner play, you would be able to choose the desired settings and have control over the action sequences. But if, like me, you’re looking for full insertion capability coupled with the additional features, this beaver is likely not the right animal for you.

For me, the vibrator was successful in helping achieve an above average orgasm, though perhaps not as good as more expensive models such as the aforementioned Rabbit Pearl. While I’m undecided about the validity of the G-Spot, the vibrator’s vaginal section did seem to be more stimulating that those with traditionally vertical shaped shafts of the same size. The vibrator also works nicely in conjunction with plug in vibrators/massagers like the Wahl and the Hitachi Magic Wand.

There may be more stimulating dual action vibrators on the market; however, for its relatively inexpensive price tag, the Flirty G is a worthy buy and might be an easy way to spice up your toy collection.

I've only really ever used the typical low quality bullet vibes, so this vibrator was a sassy step up! I really liked that the Tsunami runs on AA batteries, instead of the smaller ones some use that you can only usually find at the sex toy store you bought it from. So, if you are out, you can just pop over to any store and get new ones. Plus, it is quite portable since it is not a plug-in.

To get it in the open and out of the way: the item’s name, Pleasure Me Purse, is a command to someone else. While the purse is awesome, it could be a downer for someone who expected something along the lines of a Pleasure Myself Purse.

Good Vibrations' Pleasure Me Purse Kit comes with a waterproof Magic Touch Bullet Mini Vibrator, a deliciously scented Mini Heart-Shaped Rub Me Massage Bar, .5 ounces of crème brûlée flavored Devour Me Lickable Body Oil, and a sample of Please Cream Lubricant. While the “purse” itself seems hardly big enough for lipstick and an o.b. tampon, the contents are so varied, and in some cases so multipurpose, one would be hard-pressed to try them all out in one evening (or one morning, or one really exciting afternoon).

In small quantities, the crème brûlée body oil can be great, and opening the miniature bottle can fill a room with its potent scent, which I might have first guessed to be waffles and maple syrup. When dabbed strategically and appropriately, the oil turns ordinary old oral into a tasty treat. As my partner jokingly put it, “I really like that stuff. It made you suck my dick like a delicious lollipop.”

I have mentioned in a previous review that I ask a little more of my vibrators than a gentle shake–which is, of course, what one gets from the small toy included in this kit. Now to the shape of the vibrator. The box advertises that the pistol of the flower is the vibrating part, perfect for stimulating the clitoris. However, that is not the case. Powered by a silver bullet near the top of the toy, the entire unit vibrates. While the flower shape of the toy cups the clitoral area, a user gets more stimulation by flipping the vibrator over and using the silver bullet directly. The actual movement of the pistol is minimal.

While the Water Lily design may not be ideal for all women, it does work wonders in the water. Because of the elongated length of the toy, it is easy to use in the bathtub without straining the user's hand. Blueberry Buzz

The Blueberry Buzz vibrator looks like a good time, if a good time brings the 1970s disco era to mind—you dancing with your friends in a place overflowing with neon electric lights and disco music. This vibrator, in a loud neon electric blue, looks like a lava lamp, only in miniature. It is a compact 6.25 inches, and approximately one inch wide, which makes it a great travel companion—but clearly, in size and girth, won’t rock your world.

The series of Waterproof Turbo Gliders is touted as being waterproof, and I can confirm the battery-powered vibrator still works when wet. The sound of the vibe is quite tame compared to the buzz-saw cacophony of some other vibes out there, which, for me, is one of the Blueberry Buzz's advantages.

At the same time, the power of the vibrator itself is moderately palpable at best. The power is muted by the fact that the head, or nodule, at the tip of the vibrator is separated from the body of the vibrator by a plastic disk. The consequence is that the head is detached from the vibrations that shake the body of the vibrator; there’s no action at the tip. The plasticity of the vibrator again adds to its value as a travel companion, but it also makes the vibrator feel terribly cheap—it seems more of a gag gift than sex toy.

Also a bit perplexing is the product note included in the package, which reads “[f]or external use only.” Um... really? To my vibe-enthusiasts out there, I suppose there’s not much more to say, now, is there? Clearly Blueberry Buzz is intended for some lighthearted fun—perhaps even waved around as a glow-stick at a Jonas Brothers concert—but it is not intended for hardcore action.

Climax Silicone Splash Dolphin Vibrator

I was immediately intrigued by the vibrant blue and white swirl sea mammal design of the Climax Silicone Splash Dolphin vibrator. Although the toy is nearly six inches long (and just over one inch thick), only four inches of the Dolphin can be used for insertion, so deep thrusting is out of the question. For those who prefer a smoother texture, the silicone offers a soft, flesh-like feel. For me, though, I prefer the bumps and ridges offered by the real thing.

There is a loop at the end of the dolphin that holds a bullet vibrator. When the bullet was in place, the Dolphin was hard to handle and lacked in ease of operation. The vibe also only has one speed, and the high-speed vibration was overwhelming after a short period and started to have a numbing effect. When used without the vibe, the loop offers a nice handle for easy maneuvering. Bullet or not, I had no luck at all with G-spot stimulation by myself or with a partner.

Since the Dolphin is medical grade silicone, it’s hygienic and simple to clean; it's even dishwasher safe (though I'm not sure I will be cleaning it with my dishes).

Others who are looking for shallow penetration or intense clitoral stimulation may find the Climax Silicone Splash Dolphin more enjoyable than I did—but if you're more like me, you should save your money.

This feature made penetration gentler and more pleasurable than my other vibe, and the waves keep it from slipping out when things get intense. If penetration isn’t your thing, the soft tip makes for excellent clitoral stimulation. Handling the Wavy G is a breeze if you're going solo or using it with a partner. The narrow base is less cumbersome, and if you’ve got smaller hands you’ll appreciate how it slims down near the vibration dial, which makes it easier to adjust during play. Vibration speed goes from “mild to wild,” and while the speeds dosn’t disappoint, my other vibe easily outpaces the “wild” setting on the Wavy G.

Why the “G” on Wavy G? At first I thought this was a G-spot vibrator, but this isn't stated anywhere on the package, so the product name could be a little misleading. In theory the vibrator looks like it could be shaped for this purpose, depending on how you positioned it, but when I gave it a try the only sensation I felt was that I had to pee. The G-spot may be elusive in my anatomy, but I wouldn’t count this vibe out as a good stimulator for others!

I appreciate that there is no buxom blonde in a thong prancing about on the package telling me how much I should like it. When I go sex toy shopping, porno-style packaging looks cheap to me and turns me off. This packaging informatively displays the product, letting me imagine my own fun without some un-inventive airbrushed model getting in the way. For its smoothness, softness, and ease of use, the Silicone Fun Vibes Wavy G is quickly becoming my go-to toy.

Vibrators are loud, and this one is no different: at low or high speed, it sounds like a lawnmower.

Furthermore, the EZ Bend is actually not that bendable; the tip of the vibe gives a little, but I would be reluctant to boast of its bendability. As the company advertises, the force of the vibrator is, indeed, palpable from one end of the shaft to the other. It is quite a forceful vibe for its size, which might lead to some bodily discomfort and numbness with prolonged use.

All in all, the EZ Bend is a fun, but far from fantastic, toy.
