    &lt;p&gt;On the heels of International Women’s Day, the &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.iaac.us/&quot;&gt;Indo-American Arts Council&lt;/a&gt; in New York City hosted the North American premiere of a unique and thought-provoking Indian play called &lt;em&gt;Draupadi – Will My Spirit Live On?&lt;/em&gt; Produced and conceptualized by Shivani Wazir Pasrich, and co-directed by Pasrich and Tina Johnson, &lt;em&gt;Draupadi&lt;/em&gt; weaves a tale from the Hindu epic &lt;em&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0140446818/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;tag=feminrevie-20&amp;amp;linkCode=as2&amp;amp;camp=1789&amp;amp;creative=9325&amp;amp;creativeASIN=0140446818&quot;&gt;Mahabharata&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/em&gt; with an intense contemporary story of a woman battling her experience with sexual abuse. The play sheds light on the plight of many women suffering such abuse, connecting a mythological tale with a modern parallel, and delivers a mostly engaging experience.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The play extends the story of Draupadi (played by Pasrich), from her travails that were supposed to have triggered a great war, crossing centuries to meet Maaya (Charu Shankar) in modern day India. Draupadi is stuck between heaven and earth, pondering her fate and choices, and being guided by her confidant Lord Krishna. Maaya is a young housewife who is taken advantage of by her husband Arjun’s brother Kaurav, and is too afraid of societal taboos to fight for justice. Added into the mix is Krishna, who flits in and out of situations donning various avatars to help guide the two women in distress towards finding peace with their own respective scenarios.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;One of the play’s greatest strengths is in its talented and accomplished cast. Pasrich as Draupadi exudes confidence and power in her quest for salvation and also helping Maaya out of her predicament. She does, however, remain angry throughout, thus affecting the depth of the character. Shankar plays Maaya with a dignified innocence and is quick to gain audience sympathy.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The most spirited performance comes from Dilip Shankar as Krishna, portraying a deity with an edge. He provides the comic relief in many tense scenes and dishes out ample doses of tough love that would come from any respected mentor, heavenly or human. Among the rest of the cast, Arjun Fauzdar as Maaya’s husband Arjun and Ashish Paliwal as Sukarna are both competent in their roles.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;When asked about the genesis of the play, Pasrich explained, “It’s just essentially that, as women, we judge ourselves very harshly and we expect ourselves to perform so many different roles. And we do it happily with a smile. But at the end of the day we realize everybody’s going through the same kind of situation, our issues are similar, and there’s a great strength that you get out of that. So that was the reason to bring [Draupadi] into the current times because, if anyone’s had a difficult life, it’s Draupadi. So whoever today is having a tough time, it couldn’t be tougher than Draupadi’s life and if she moved on, so can everyone else.”&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Draupadi – Will My Spirit Live On?&lt;/em&gt; is an important work of theatre for confronting through the arts an issue that plagues Indian society today. It is a show to be watched and lauded – such artistic confrontations of social plagues need only be encouraged.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The upside for female viewers, who might normally feel marginalized by run-of-the-mill historical epics, is that despite the fact that its running time of eight hours is jam-packed with said themes, the film still manages to include interesting female characters. And even though all of the characters have been created using a twenty-first century perspective, rather than one contemporary to the story, they pique our interest as to whether or not collective humanity has evolved much since the days of Catholic indulgences.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The central plot revolves around the building of a Gothic cathedral at a priory run by a monk with good intentions. One of Prior Philip’s good deeds is to rescue a resourceful fleece merchant Aliena, a noblewoman who was raised by her mother to choose her own destiny. She not only becomes an entrepreneurial force to be reckoned with, while trying to restore the noble status of herself and her brother, a battling knight; she also attracts the attention of several young men, two with ill intent. Whether it is because they resent or covet her power and independence, Aliena falls victim to rape and violence. This begs the question that modern women have been asking for over a century: can a woman be both independent and loved? Many feminists struggle with reconciling heterosexual love with financial/emotional/intellectual freedom.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Aliena probably would not have thought of her situation in this way, but the series does, especially as it juxtaposes her against two other independent women: Lady Regan Hamleigh, mother to Aliena’s first suitor turned rapist, and Ellen, a supposed witch and mother to Aliena’s true love. Hamleigh, despite a physical deformity that renders her largely unattractive, is able to manipulate the men around her using her sexuality and flattery. She is one of the masterminds behind many of the evil deeds that thwart construction of the cathedral.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Ellen, a disgraced novice who fled her nunnery after conceiving her son Jack, is unique in that she is literate and multilingual. She is thought to be a witch and is consequently feared by many, mainly because she makes a habit of “cursing” those who cross her, and speaks openly about sexuality. When summing up her faith in God to Prior Philip, she says: “I love God, though I don’t worship her quite the same way as you do. My church hasn’t as many rules as yours and is a lot more forgiving. And as for morality, I use love as my compass, which Christ seemed to approve of even if you don’t.”&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Conventional motherhood is constantly challenged in &lt;em&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003UD7J94?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;tag=feminrevie-20&amp;amp;linkCode=as2&amp;amp;camp=1789&amp;amp;creative=9325&amp;amp;creativeASIN=B003UD7J94&quot;&gt;The Pillars of the Earth&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/em&gt;, especially when the most nurturing “mother” turns out to be a monk named Johnny Eightpence, who saves an abandoned baby after his biological mother’s untimely death in childbirth. Eightpence nurses baby Jonathan with goat’s milk and hugs him close during his fledgling years, much to the bewilderment of those around them, masculine stoicism being the social expectation for men. In this story, women rebel against established authorities and men cower under the weight of chaos. It all leaves me wondering if things would have been different were women the wielders of swords?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The acting is generally fine with standout performances from Hayley Atwell (Aliena) and Eddie Redmayne (Jack). The production is atmospheric and sufficiently gritty, though film stock would have brought out the nuances of the sets and costumes better than the HD Video that was employed. However, &lt;em&gt;Pillars&lt;/em&gt; feels pinched for time with many major characters. Pielmeier dwells too long on the details of the war between competing monarchs—background information that viewers can research—and sacrifices quality time with the elaborate fictional world of Kingsbridge. This experiment created beings that resemble vampires (don’t go out during the day, don’t age, feed on humans, etc.), and they have escaped. There’s a little girl, Amy, who was also a subject in the experiment, but who fared better than the others because she retained some of her humanity. The creatures are killing most of the U.S. population, and a man helps Amy escape. We jump forward a hundred years to a small settlement of survivors still trying to protect themselves against these creatures. It’s up to them and Amy to save what’s left of the country, perhaps the world.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;No pat description can really do this book justice. The first part could have been a novel all on its own, and it probably would have been one of my favorites if it ended there. But as I kept reading, the storyline, character development, suspense, and surprises made the book unforgettable. Beyond that, there was the strength of the female characters, the significance of race—or lack thereof—in a society that believes they’re the last humans left, and the contemplation of how we pass down our history and what it means to future generations. All of this took me away from any traditional idea of sci-fi, fantasy, or trendy vampire lit to a look at what our culture is and what it could be.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I’ve read through negative reviews of this book, and while I can understand where others are coming from, I don’t agree. The biggest complaint I’ve read is that the book ends abruptly. That’s because this is the first book of three, and there’s more of this story to tell. &lt;p&gt;Another complaint is that while the first part of the book is beautifully written, it stumbles a bit after that. I agree that the first part is written much better than the rest, but it’s something I didn’t worry about as I let myself get into the story rather than focusing on the writing. After a hundred pages or so (a drop in the bucket for a book over 700 pages long), the story and the suspense carried me through to the end.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The best way I can sell this book is to admit that I could not put it down. Even when the story started to slow, even when I found myself awake at three o&#039;clock in the morning with my fiancé groaning that I wasn’t asleep, even when I should have been eating food rather than words during my lunch break, I kept reading. It was hard to leave that world, even for a few hours.     &lt;p&gt;The wait for a high-octane, all-engrossing drama just became longer. But that doesn&#039;t mean we don&#039;t have a decent watch in hand with &lt;em&gt;Raajneeti&lt;/em&gt;. The setup is certainly complex and intriguing, and there are a couple of sly and conniving twists, no doubt. Yet depth is still missing, almost as if introducing the characters and their connections was an end in itself, and not merely the beginning nor the means to get there.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Given that the characters are based on &lt;em&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0140446818?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;tag=feminrevie-20&amp;amp;linkCode=as2&amp;amp;camp=1789&amp;amp;creative=9325&amp;amp;creativeASIN=0140446818&quot;&gt;Mahabharat&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/em&gt;, it would take real skill to make them uninteresting. In fact, if you focus only on that angle, you&#039;ll see even more curious amalgamations. It&#039;s best to leave these aside and just watch the film for what it is. Despite so much potential for complexity, the lack of details along with the creativity-challenged treatment of the situations can give you the heebie-jeebies. Some of the scenes, like the one in which a sundry woman gets pregnant, clearly didn&#039;t belong here. Nor do the on-the-face references to the mythological epic. It also would have helped to keep the Corleones, Gandhis, and Thackerays at bay. As glaring as they are, they only serve as distractions.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;With the various connections and cross-connections, the film deserved a lot more in terms of flow from one sub-plot to another. Instead we get a &quot;my turn-my turn&quot; shout out by the characters whenever they were made missing-in-action for a bit.     &lt;p&gt;Initially, I was put off by Emanuel and The Fear. I didn’t understand their show tunes inspiration, their jaunty piano melodies, and their choral backing. It’s been a long road from the high school show choir stage to the sofa where I sit today, and it took several weeks for &lt;em&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0034C24O6?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;tag=feminrevie-20&amp;amp;linkCode=as2&amp;amp;camp=1789&amp;amp;creative=9325&amp;amp;creativeASIN=B0034C24O6&quot;&gt;Listen&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/em&gt; to grow on me. Once it did, it was a like a viral infection for which there is no cure.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Emanuel and The Fear sound like some combination of The Mountain Goats meets Bowie meets The Polyphonic Spree meets &lt;em&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000HZFP?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;tag=feminrevie-20&amp;amp;linkCode=as2&amp;amp;camp=1789&amp;amp;creative=9325&amp;amp;creativeASIN=B00000HZFP&quot;&gt;Hedwig And The Angry Inch&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/em&gt;. (Throw in some Arcade Fire for good measure.) Epic, sweeping melodies complete with cymbal clashes blend rather comfortably with mostly-spoken lyrics. The album—a neverending musical storytelling exercise if there ever was one—is best played in one steady stream, no skipping tracks, no searching for radio-ready singles. For this reason alone, I can only imagine how amazing Emanuel and The Fear—all eleven of them—are in concert.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Though all the songs fit together seamlessly, “Jimme’s Song” was an immediate favorite with Jimme lamenting, via Emanuel, “I don’t want to do nothing but be in a rock band/I don’t wanna get a job/I don’t wanna be a man.” Thankfully—for me, if not for my partner—this anti-adult sentiment doesn’t describe my ex-boyfriends so much as it describes me. Sometimes I am so freaking pleased that I don’t conform to daily wage slavery in a cubicle; other days, it seems a little too obvious that I am over-educated and under thirty. All I want is a metaphorical rock band—the real one, not that video game fakery—to be my job, to pay the bills. Instead, I review albums. We all make compromises.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Similarly, “Free Life” speaks to the ways you can take control of your own destiny. “It’s a free life if you live it/Why not give it a try.” For all the unfortunate things I have been in my life, the worst thing I’ve ever been was confined.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“Same Way” also speaks to my romantic-but-partnered heart—as if one supersedes the other. To no one’s surprise, I am the downer half of the couple, the misanthrope who cries for no reason and will never be satisfied with my own twisted version of “success.” Just the other night, I was actively frowning (not that I noticed), and my partner leaned over to look at my glum face. “It’s really hard,” he said with total sympathy.” “What is?” I asked. “To be happy.”&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;How you can’t seem to be happy&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;em&gt;Unless you’re making some poor girl feel the same&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;em&gt;But I don’t wanna be that way&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;em&gt;So if you gotta leave me babe&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;em&gt;I won’t say anything&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;With an impressively generous nineteen songs on one album, Emanuel and The Fear remind me of all the reasons I fell in love with the total album experience as a youngster. Catch them on tour this spring and tell me how much you loved the show.&lt;/p&gt;    &lt;div&gt;

The simple dot-with-a-tail in this band’s name changes it from a death van for male offspring to a juxtaposition of a human and vehicle - or a parent, hand on shoulder, naming the thing with the siren as it passes. That’s exactly the sort of pondering that this music inspires, an album that Son, Ambulance’s own site bills as music for irresponsible, cat-petting, days.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The Microphones hail from a beautiful part of the United States, and it comes blaring through in their mild music. This record has remained quintessential for folkies and rockers alike for years, inj part, due to its melodic greatness that sounds like the very mountains of the Northwest; it rises and falls like a Pacific tide you might take for granted if you see it every day. There’s an ongoing argument amongst music snobs I know; is &lt;em&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014DC014?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;tag=feminrevie-20&amp;amp;linkCode=as2&amp;amp;camp=1789&amp;amp;creative=9325&amp;amp;creativeASIN=B0014DC014&quot;&gt;The Glow, Pt. 2&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/em&gt; background music, strictly meant for headphones, or is it just important that it be heard, in any format, any setting? &lt;p&gt;The reissue of this album brings even more treasures: new songs, different album art, and backwards tracks (yes, several songs are played in reverse on the bonus disc.) &lt;p&gt;Lavinia walks out of Vergil’s epic poem &lt;em&gt;The Aeneid&lt;/em&gt;, where she had been a silent character. Le Guin breathes life into Lavinia by creating her world and truly epic story, a tale that is both about love on many levels and war in all its reality. Le Guin manages to capture a mother/daughter relationship that could translate into modern day newspaper article. The author showers this ancient character with a unique voice, in which Lavinia speaks to the spirit of the poet, setting the whole tone of the novel.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I am not a reader of fantasy, but I found the story captivating. This novel is strong and rich in detail and will entice any reader. The images are vivid and the Roman myth of Latrius and Amata, Lavinia’s parents, comes alive in Le Guin’s own way of expanding the story with her imagination. Le Guin’s language is like music, poetry formed into a novel.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Le Guin’s beautiful alternative world made me a fan. I strongly suggest this book to readers of different genres. If you’re not a fantasy reader, come on step out of your box and try this wonderful book. You won’t be sorry.&lt;/p&gt;    &lt;div&gt;
